Introducing Me

Hello, my name is Skylar Morales, I am 16 years old and am a Junior in high school. For the first 15 years of my life, I never would have considered myself a politically involved individual. I grew up in a household where no one watched the news or spoke about political issues or figures. So, in my “not knowing” of anything in the political realm I thought I wanted nothing to do with it. I had this idea/stereotype in my head that everyone who is in politics or who wanted to go into politics was…crazy or corrupt. It wasn’t until one day, I was mindlessly scrolling through Youtube videos, when a video of Alexandria Ocassio-Cortez popped up in the suggestion box. It was only a minute and 45 seconds, and it was about Donald Trump. For that mere two minutes I was entranced by the way she fearlessly spoke about the hypocrisy of our very own President. After having seen that video I went on to Instagram (as any teen looking to “instastalk” someone would) and followed AOC, Ilhan Omar, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, and so many more politicians just like them. This is when I was starting to get inspired and passionate about educating myself on all the issues I’m concerned about. Topics like Immigration, Police Brutality, Income inequality, Climate Change, transgender and all LGQBT+ issues, and some much more. However, I had no idea where to start or where to look, what facts were true, and which ones were false. Most of all, as I was learning about all these issues, there were so many political terms that made no sense to me. That’s when I came up with the idea for this blog. I sincerely believe that it is so important for teenagers to know and understand what is happening in politics, and in their government. Us young adults are the future, and I think now, more than ever, it is important for us to understand what the political climate we are going to inherit is like. Being educated on issues in a way that we can understand them is powerful. It allows us to take the real facts and form our own opinions so we can become activists in our own communities. So, if you are reading this I hope you stay awhile and gain whatever it is you feel you need.
